Difference between Stocks and Shares

Stocks and Shares are commonly used interchangeably to refer to ownership in a company, but there is a difference between the two.

A stock represents a unit of ownership in a company. When a company wants to raise capital, it can issue stocksto the public, which are then bought and sold on the stock market. If a person buys a stock, they become a shareholder in the company, and as the company grows and generates profits, the value of their stock can increase.

Shares, on the other hand, refer to the total number of stocks issued by a company. For example, if a company has issued 1 million stocks, it has 1 million shares outstanding.

In summary, stocks represent a unit of ownership in a company, while shares represent the total number of stocks issued by a company. When an individual buys a stock, they own a portion of the total shares of the company.
